What have we worked on this year?
What are some of the trends that we have seen?
Who have we helped maximise their media & technology?
What were the highlights for us, and for our clients?
What are we planning for next year?
2016 year in review – 2016 was certainly a year of change! And I’m not referring to Brexit or Trump! If you arent familiar with our story up to 2016 you can catch up with a brief history of Big Wave over the years and key milestones! – From starting out as Ireland’s 1st Adobe Authorised Training Centre to Apple Authorised, Android ATC Authorised, CIW Authorised Centre, City&Guilds and leading provider of digital, tech, coding and publishing training provider in Ireland.
Satisfying some Tech Hungry Shortages
As we started the year we were still very much involved in finishing out delivering some of the largest and highest level technical training contracts in the country. These were our:
- Android Developer programmes – Android ATC Developer Certification)
delivered under DevStream brand (industry training for developers) .
Over an 18 month period (Phew!) we took some 120 Junior Developers through hands-on developer programmes (in Dawson street premises no less!) lasting 8 months in length and including 2 month software development projects!. Some undertaking, and some experience. We set up teams of developers and built over 30 Android App and Mobile/Web projects for clients which included Pharmaceuticals, Engineering companies, SME’s along with some of the countries most exciting tech start-ups such as GlowDX, InTouch (Bundly.io), and more. Here’s a few links to some of the projects and companies which are set to grow and employ in Ireland through the global tech space:
A goal of these courses was to help get technical roles filled with new developer talent. This was like going back to my career roots as one of my early roles was as software developer in London (interactive TV) so I appreciate what it takes to sink or swim in these roles, and what essentially companies are looking for when hiring new talent.
So I spent a fair amount of time working in Dublin with Recruitment, HR, and job search professionals on the requirements side. We also spent time mentoring developers into the next stages of their career, coaching them with interview techniques and giving them the confidence needed to get into technical roles. This was a new challenge involving a combination of technical and social media training, combined with HR and communications skills training, but a very rewarding one. We love to see the impact of our training and hear the results were sometimes literally life and career changing. I wish all those who secured new roles in exciting companies the very best, as well as those who boldly moved into the freelance space.
Back to (Core) Business
The next chapter saw us regain focus on our core areas of training, which is about making clients and companies more productive, more efficient, & more capable with the latest tools and technologies available to them (Adobe, Apple, Web, Video and Digital Media). This refocusing process is where our new strapline came from – ‘Maximise Your Media & Technology’.
We also redeveloped new logo formats and our Big Wave website to make it more accessible, responsive, and user friendly for you to research courses, reach out to us for any questions you have, highlight areas that we deliver on like customised onsite training, and make it easier to book our courses online. Its still a work in progress but we hope we are able to communicate more effectievly with clients and customers through and with the blog posts on news and technology.
Here are some of the Companies, Technologies, and Tools that we delivered impact for in 2016;
Apple is moving more & more into the Corporate world
Apple constinues to grow as a consumer brand, but more interestingly as a corporate tool of choice. It’s certainly the direction Apple are going in, and our training is a reflection of that. This year we helped big brands like PaddyPower and the Irish Times make the most of the growing number of Apple Macs used in their business.
To see the spread of the Apple technology we were very proud this year to deliver similar Apple technical training to the likes of Irish Defence Forces, US Embassy and the Exec Council of the Inn of Court NI.
Education is always a strong area for Apple as we know ourselves having delivered our training on iMacs for some 8 years now, so this year it was great to support technical teams in Dublin Business School and Educational Authority of Southern Regional NI. For some fun feedback here’s a video testimonial from Krzysztof of Dublin Business School after his Apple Certification training for Technical Support Professionals (OSX Support Essentials ACSP) :
Not to be outdone, the Creative and Agency space is always an adopter of smart slick technology like Apple so it was a pleasure to deliver again for clients like Rothco in areas like Keynote. You can read more about our Keynote customised training on this blog “How We Make Some of the Best, Look Better – with Keynote Training”
The Adobe Creative Cloud is now a standard part of modern business communications
What does this statement mean? Well Adobe has always served this role, but since moving to their subscription based service there has been a transitional period where clients adopt this model while Adobe develop the real benefits of the ‘Cloud’ to them over time. This is now bearing fruit – it is all coming together.
Benefits of the Creative Cloud:
- The shared content,
- easy access to amazing fonts for free all the time,
- stunning assets to use in designs,
- templates all built in or accessible from every application,
- stock images for use in design development before licensing,
- collaborating on files in teams or with clients….
- not to mention some amazing, smart and time saving technologies to help produce marketing, web video or web materials.
The warnings were always ‘dont upgrade and you’ll get left behind’ – and we are now seeing this and enjoying helping clients really make the most of these time-saving and cost-saving technologies. And clients are essentially anyone who needs to create documents, images or content for web print video or mobile device – so really all business across the board! We are really enjoying helping clients maximise these new-found benefits.
Where our clients reap the most benefit is when they take our Adobe Training Packs combining training across the applications like Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator. Especially now they are all so integrated; this year clients like:
TG4, EY, European Hockey Foundation, NeoPost, and *Award winning Hotel of the Year – Harvey’s Point!
What is so exciting for us that the market is so varied for using the Adobe toolsets so they range from pharmaceuticals like Athlone Labs to Boston Scientific to educational sectors like National University of Maynooth and University of Limerick Engage.
Some Highlights of 2016
iOS and iPads in Business
I mentioned Apple tech in corporates and also iOS. Well after being the first to offer course like iPad for Business this year we delivered some exciting customised sessions for companies who are adopting iPads and iOs devices into their workflow to be more efficient, up-to-date and generally more effective. We see devices more and more in business use – even checking in at the airport now its the boarding pass on your phone that gets you onto the plane.
So a highlight was delivering customised training sessions like ‘iPads for Sales Teams‘ for clients like Astellas. This was about both the technology, but also the soft skills around incorporating them into modern business practises. Its is rewarding to be able add this level of customisation to ensure clients gain the traction with technology in their everyday, and ultimately gain the results and competitive edge of their investment.
If you are using or thinking of deploying iPads or iPhones in your business we can help with supporting this move, both on a practical level and a technical level with new Apple iOS deployment & security courses for 2017.
More for Munster
Dublin is buzzing that’s for sure. But it’s also starting to creak at the seams again with the resurgence of business and tourism activity especially at peak times. So it is no wonder we have seen the movement of more activity in the Munster region. Limerick has seen growth in FDA, and some exciting appointments like Niall O’Callaghan in the IDA who wrote a nice piece about more jobs expected for Limerick in April this year. Sure enough this was followed by WordPress Engine setting up its Tech Support and Innovation Centre in Limerick, after Uber have already set up their $4 million centre of Excellence along with TroyStudios setting up in Plassey Prk Limerick.
Off the back of these we have seen an increase in training activity in the digital media sector in the Munster region and, very topical, – delivering some advanced WordPress Training! for both corporate clients and County Councils.
Supporting the City (Courses for Limerick)
So, with our admin and accounts based in Limerick, we are delighted to have started delivering scheduled Adobe Courses in Limerick again! Initially the main Adobe apps Photoshop and InDesign and Illustrator but we expect this to grow. It has been great to work with clients like Limerick County Council helping them promote the Limerick region, and also UL Engage who have an interesting mission to support the skills and tech knowledge of the wider community in Limerick, an area we are very proud to support ourselves. And its not just scheduled courses – we have delivered a variety of customised sessions in Photoshop and InDesign for clients like Forum Publications in Cork.
Post Course (Youtube and Instagram) Support
This is an area that our clients always say they value from us. We don’t just train and walk away. Training is about ensuring the skills and knowledge delivered is incorporated into the workflow. So we offer email support after every course, and have extended this to include tips and short video training sessions for them to back up their training. This is an area we see set to grow as we look to support our clients in the future. An area where you will see this grow is our Big Wave Media Training YouTube Channel. To give you a flavour – we have a tester clip set up here!
We are always posting pics of our lovely centre and iMacs when setting up courses – so we have set up our Big Wave Media Training Instagram account – which we look to grow with more imagery and useful tips!
Croom Enterprise Centre – Our new base and Limerick Training Centre
Thanks to Innovate Limerick fo helping us transition to a gem of a spot in Croom! Croom is ideally positioned for the Limerick area and access to the Munster region as well as the road to Dublin, is easy to get to with ample parking and state of the art business and training facilities. Here’s a few pics of the centre and training in action at Big Wave.
Ormond Quay – Our new Dublin Training Centre
In Dublin we moved as well – but not far! Just around the corner. We, and our clients enjoy the city centre location for our short course training, and the Ormond Building is a first class location with modern decor and state of the art training facility. If you haven’t yet been we look forward to welcoming you and offering you a Nespresso coffee on arrival!
