- More to Come
Edge is often being compared to another Adobe release Flash. At this point of time Flash has the advantage of being around for a long time, while Edge is new to the market and is still in beta version. However, because Edge uses HTML CSS and JavaScript to create animations, is gets the full benefits of being visible by search engines and that distinguishes it from Flash.
As I mentioned Adobe Flash is well established on the market. It is number one choice for web designers who want to create animated banners, full flash websites or even games or applications. The good news for those of you who are confident in using Flash and want to give Edge a try is, you wont have any problems. Adobe Edge interface is very similar to Flash’s with the commonly known elements like the stage, timeline, assets or symbols conveniently placed for your disposal.
When building websites efficiency is the key. So we’ve tested Edge in that department. With a little bit of self training and the previous Flash experience we have managed to animate our home page banner in no time, which is amazing. Static to animated – no problem. You can see the result here.
Have you ever seen that message?
If you did it means that your browser was missing a flash plugin or (which is more common case) you were trying to view a flash element on your iPhone/iPad. The fact is Apple devices do not support flash. But they surely have no problem displaying HTML CSS and JavaScript elements, and since Edge uses those technologies to create content, your iPhone/iPad can now enjoy fully interactive websites. All thanks to Adobe Edge.
Edge is free to try out. You can get a newest version here. Although it is still in Adobe Labs, it will be available straight away when it is released to all Creative Cloud subscribers. Another good reason to join in!
Even though there is some more testing and tweaking to be done Adobe Edge seems to be a solid piece of software which for now will coexist along-side with Flash. What future brings who knows, one thing is sure though, Edge will be evolving to fully take advantage of new HTML and CSS. That is a good news for all: designers can now reach more public with interactively enriched websites, and viewer can enjoy beautiful sites on any device of their choice.
